Want a vivid
armchair tour of Peter’s hometown?
Are you a wannabe archeologist who wants an
inside look at a dig and its finds without
getting dusty?
Are you debating – should you or shouldn’t
you join a dig this summer?
After Jerusalem and Capernaum, Bethsaida is
the third most mentioned city in the
Gospels. It was the hometown of Peter,
Andrew and Philip and the site of the
feeding of the 5,000, the one miracle
mentioned in all four Gospels. Since
1987, excavations at Bethsaida have revealed
a small part of the first century AD village
as well as remains from a city gate, palace
and temple from one thousand years earlier,
from
the time of David.
Seasoned archeologist Dr. Jimmy Albright of
St. Joseph Missouri who has brought his
students to dig with him at Bethsaida has
created a DVD that gives a fascinating, very
nitty-gritty sense of what it’s like to dig
at this important biblical site.
“Archeology is labor,” says Dr. Albright in
Digging It at Tel Bethsaida. “It is a
very dirty, hot, sweaty intensive-labor
endeavor. It is not the romantic world
that many times archeologists are pictured
engaged in. But it is magical because
in all this hard work, you never know what’s
going to turn up at the next moment.
You never know what’s going to appear.”
