Stations of the Cross | Via Dolorosa

As you walk the busy and bustling marketplace in Jerusalem’s Old City, imagine the vast majority of pilgrims, natives, farmers and merchants indifferent, or even hostile, towards Jesus as he made his way up to Calvary.

The Via Dolorosa, or the Way of the Cross, is a devotional walk, beginning near the Antonia fortress, believed to be the Praetorium, where Jesus appeared before the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate. It concludes in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher which includes the Latin Calvary, or Golgotha, and the Tomb.

A 17th century “Status Quo” Agreement between feuding Christian denominations forbids group Bible reading within the Holy Sepulcher Church, but a number of small chapels along the way welcome pilgrims for prayer, reflection, Scripture reading and singing.
