“THEN THEY CAME TO A PLACE NAMED GETHSEMANE, AND
HE TOLD HIS DISCIPLES, ‘SIT HERE WHILE I PRAY’ ”
MARK 14

Pilgrims talk about the Garden of Gethsemane

"I met a man yesterday. I met a friend. I met my Savior. It’s a very hard and troubling thing to go through life as a young woman of faith who feels like my God is a stranger.  Who was this Man who loved me so much He would die for me?  I sat in the garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives and closed my eyes and prayed.  I asked to understand. I prayed for grace.

In that garden where the Son of God wept and gave Himself for me the quiet answer came.  Love wrapped around and flowed into me and as I also shuddered and wept, I saw Him. He touched me and washed my soul clean.  He was my age when He saved all of us. “Thank you,” was all I could say through my tears and I hoped He could read my heart and what words could not describe.  The light shimmered and my tears stopped. Grace filled me and I know He understood.  In the garden I met Jesus."

"While standing in front of the Garden of Gethsemane, I was moved by two thoughts. First, this is the place where Jesus succeeded (when every other human being has failed).  Instead of caving in, he held fast.  He submitted himself to the purposes of God over and above self-interest and self-preservation.  It caused me to love him more, as well as make a new effort to live like him.

Second, it occurred to me how relatively little we do to infuse our lives with spiritual food.  I (and many I know) are so occupied with what we have to do – for our families, service on the job, attending to our friendships – that we have little energy left for our own personal/spiritual nourishment.  Is it possible that Jesus’ own strength can be traced back to the times he made those on-going personal investments?

The good news is that this pilgrimage has been about that very same thing for me. For a week straight, it is like drinking from a spiritual fire hose – and it isn’t like God has been “speaking” through every thing.  It is just that the whole environment, every site, every thing you hear and see is adding to the development of my faith.

I think every Christian should do this at least once in his life!"

"I am in the Garden of Gethsemane, my bible opened to Matthew 26:36. The Bible teacher, Kevin, describes the scene – evening, Jesus with His disciples, here in this place. He takes Peter, James and John, thinking they will comfort Him. Jesus here, sweating blood, so much going through His mind, so greatly troubled.

I look across the busy city streets and see the gates of Jerusalem. Jesus, in this very garden, would have seen the gates open and the armed crowd, carrying torches, exit the gates and head to the garden to arrest Him. Jesus waits. He will be arrested on His schedule.

I am at home now – another stone in my path, another trial to endure. Now I remember that hour in Gethsemane and suddenly all is put into the proper perspective. My Father, not as I will, but as You will."

“I am where my Lord was, maybe in the same spot on that night so long ago.  Would I have stayed awake and prayed with him?  What kind of disciple would I have been? What kind of disciple am I now?  Am I truly committed?  Do I only talk the talk, yet think I walk the walk?”
