Hymns for the Way of the Cross

As you walk the Stations of the Cross, it's difficult not to be distracted by the merchants and hawkers plying their colorful ware, whether it's pungent spices, freshly slaughtered lamb, fuzzy green almonds or thirty postcards for one dollar.

Singing is a way to stay focused.  The following hymns complement the readings I suggest in Bible References for the Way of the Cross.

Station One:  Jesus is condemned to death

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Break me, melt me, mould me, fill me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Station Two:  Jesus takes up the Cross

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Station Three:  Jesus falls for the first time

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Station Four:  Jesus meets his Mother Simon of Cyrene with Jesus, Station Five

Someone's crying Lord, kum ba yah
Someone's crying Lord, kum ba yah
Someone's crying Lord, kum ba yah
Oh Lord, kum ba yah.

Station Five:  Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry his Cross

Jesus remember me when you come into
your kingdom.

Station Six:  Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

Station Seven:  Jesus falls the second time

Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?

Station Eight:  Jesus consoles the women of Jerusalem

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

No singing is allowed in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, so you may want to sing on the roof of the church, before descending through the Ethiopian Chapel to the main entrance.  Or you may want to continue the hymns celebrating Jesus' resurrection during your visit to the Garden Tomb.

the grave?
Were you there when he rose up from the
grave?
O sometimes it causes me to tremble,
tremble, tremble,
Were you there when he rose up from the
grave?
He is Lord, he is Lord
He is risen from the dead and he is Lord.
